Amur Cork Tree

The Rebel Cork Tree — Texture With Attitude 🌿
The Amur Cork Tree (Phellodendron amurense) isn’t here to play nice—it’s here to bring grit, texture, and presence. Thick, corky bark steals the show—rugged, deeply ridged, and better every year. This tree doesn’t scream. It commands. 🌳
You know the cork plugs on wine bottles? That's how this bark feels to touch. There are a handful of mature cork trees on the University of Alberta land. Nothing like them.
Wide canopy, clean structure, and golden fall color make it a full-season performer—without the fragility. Built tough for prairie life, it handles cold, drought, and wind with ease. Proven in St. Paul down to brutal -40s. ❄️
Mature Size: ~35–45 ft x 30–40 ft
Growth: Moderate, steady ⚡
Vibe: Strong, grounded, different
Plant it where you want permanence—because this one only gets better with time.
Rebel Tip
Give it space and let the bark do the talking.

Growing Requirements in Alberta: This willow is one of the easiest trees to grow in Alberta and it will not require any special care. Water well during the first couple summers and fertilize when looking for extra growth. The tree is happy with all types of soils and can handle sun or part shade.
