Maple - Autumn Blaze

It has been a long time coming to find a reliable and beautiful sugar maple tree that was hardy in Alberta's harsh climate. Many people have seen the rare, mature sugar maple here and there on the prairies but they were never sold at the local nurseries. This is the original maple syrup-producing tree and we finally have the proper choice for our climate. Introducing the Inferno Sugar Maple. This tree has withstood -45c in St. Paul, Alberta and continues to grow fantastically. The fall color is one of the best that can be found anywhere on the planet. It has explosions of reds and oranges which manifest uniquely every year so you have something new to look forward to each fall. The tree looks like it is lit up in flames during autumn. Typically the fall colors show up around late September or early October and last one to two weeks. The leaves are very big (something that is not typical of trees found in Alberta). This tree will become very large and it should be placed in a spot where it can grow. Keep it away from overhead power lines or buildings. Full sun is best. It is a very versatile tree that can handle all types of soils and has drought tolerance once established (typically after 3-5 years). It can grow upto 1-2ft per year and rarely 3ft if given a fertilizer like Neptune's Harvest Fish Fertilizer. Growing Requirements in Alberta: The Inferno Sugar Maple is very hardy for our winters and will do exceedingly well in Edmonton if given the proper water requirements. It will need deep watering the first couple of summers especially when there is drier weather. I would continue to deep water during drought summers for the first 5 years if you want it to be at it's best. The tree originally comes from a location that gets double the precipitation that Alberta does. Turn on the hose and leave it on a slower drip so the water sinks in and leave it there until the whole root ball has been given a good soak.
Autumn Blaze Maple — The Firestorm Hybrid
This is the maple that refuses to blend in. For years, blazing maples were either too slow, too picky, or too fragile to plant with confidence. Fast growth? Check. Explosive fall color? Check. Resilient enough to thrive in almost any yard? Barely. Until now.
The Autumn Blaze Maple (Acer × freemanii 'Autumn Blaze') changes the game.
Tested across tough conditions and urban landscapes, this hybrid grows hard, fast, and vibrant. It’s not just another tree. It’s a statement.
And then comes fall.
It doesn’t simply change color.
It erupts.
Orange-red flames that make your yard feel alive. Every year a little different—like a personal firestorm you get to watch up close. For a brief but unforgettable window in September, this tree owns the landscape.
Through the growing season, it builds a dense, commanding canopy with large, bold leaves you just don’t see on ordinary maples. It feels bigger. Fuller. More established—even in its youth.
But make no mistake—this is a big tree energy move.
Give it space. Give it sun. Let it become what it was built to be.
Rebel take: The maple everyone wants, finally designed for your yard.
Mature Size: 40' x 30'
Why it belongs in your yard:
- The ultimate hybrid for rapid growth + urban toughness
- Firestorm-level red + orange fall color 🔥
- Oversized, iconic maple leaves
- Dense, shade-giving canopy
- Strong growth: 1–2 ft/year (sometimes more 👀)
- Thrives in tough soils, tolerates urban conditions + drought
- Mature trees alive in zone 2 St. Paul and lots of large ones in Edmonton.
Rebel tip: Full sun and space are non-negotiable. Water in early years and let this powerhouse reward you with decades of jaw-dropping color.

Growing Requirements in Alberta: The Autumn Blaze maple is extremely hardy with a proper watering and fertililzer schedule. Keep the roots moist the first couple of summers and don't let dry out. After that, water whenever there is periods of dry weather. Stop watering when Septermber rolls around and don't fertilize past June. The problems people incur with this tree come from underwatering or late water/fertilizing.
