Cedar - Techny

Looking for a vertical statement tree that blends elegance with resilience? Meet DeGroot’s Spire Cedar — the perfect evergreen for tight spaces. This cultivar of Thuja occidentalis (American Arborvitae) grows in a naturally narrow, columnar form, reaching up to 20–30 feet tall but only 4–6 feet wide. Its dense, spiral-twisting foliage adds architectural interest year-round, making it ideal for formal gardens, privacy screens, or as a living accent near entrances and walkways. Hardy to USDA Zone 3, DeGroot’s Spire is extremely cold-tolerant, low-maintenance, and deer-resistant — a reliable performer that doesn’t sacrifice beauty for durability.
Techny Cedar — The Heavyweight Champion
Most cedars struggle on the prairies…
This one doesn’t.
The Techny Cedar (Thuja Occidentalis 'Techny') is built different.
Wind, sun, brutal winters—it takes everything Alberta throws at it and keeps growing like nothing happened.
If you’ve been burned by weaker cedars before, this is your redemption.
Thick, dense, and naturally sculpted into a powerful teardrop shape, this isn’t your typical hedge plant. It brings weight. Presence. Structure that actually holds up over time.
And when it fills in?
You get a deep green wall that looks rich, mature, and intentional—not thin or struggling.
This is one of the toughest, most reliable cedars you can plant here—and we’ve locked in a source that’s hard to find anywhere else.
If you want the best cedar… stop looking.
Rebel take:
Not all cedars survive. This one dominates.
Mature Size: 15' x 8'
Why it belongs in your yard:
- The most wind + sun resistant cedar available 🔥
- Dense, dark green foliage year-round
- Unique teardrop shape (stands out from standard hedges)
- Builds a thick, high-performance privacy screen
- Proven hardy in Zone 2 (St. Paul tested)
- Rare, hard-to-find quality stock

The Techny Cedar has a couple important care requirements. It does not like to be dry or planted near large trees that will take its water access. Plant the Techny Cedar in rich, well drained and moist soil and keep the plant well watered during dry periods. Water well leading into winter and you will have a happy cedar.
